Some Basic Rules for Office Pranks

Wednesday, June 06, 2007

Bored at work?  Thinking of adding your personal touch to the "atmosphere"?  Forbes discusses the delicate issue of office pranks.  Following are few rules of thumb:
  • You should be able to unwind a good prank in 15 minutes, meaning that there should be no "permanent" or "long-lasting" consequences to your prank.
  • Avoid sexual pranks.
  • Everybody should have a good laugh at the end of the day.  If someone is hurt, it's not worth it.

A last word of advice: take your office culture into consideration and use your common sense.

10 Suggestions for Your Last Day at Work

Tuesday, July 11, 2006

BBC News has issued 10 "light-hearted" suggestions on what you can do on your last day at work...

Among them: give a verbal headbutt "Zidane-style" or take some letters off the computer keyboard (as it seems that when President Bush's staff took over the White House all the w's were missing...).

Day Off, a Boss's Perspective

Wednesday, May 24, 2006

So, you want the day off?

Let's take a look at what you are asking for.

There are 365 days per year available for work. There are 52 weeks a year in which you already get 2 days off per week, leaving 261 days available for work. Since you spend 16 hours each day away from work, you have used up 170 days, leaving 91 days available. You spend 30 minutes a day on a coffee break. That accounts for 23 days each year, leaving only 68 days available. With one hour for lunch period each day you use up another 46 days, leaving only 22 days available to work. You normally spend 2 days a year for sick leave. This leaves you only 20 days available for work. We are off for 5 holidays per year, so your available working time is down to 15 days. We generously give you 2 weeks off for vacation per year. This only leaves 1 day available for work.

And I'll be darned if you're going to take that day off!!

Taken literally from the Recruiters Network.  Somehow, the numbers don't really add up, but I'm too lazy to do the count...

Pranks Gone 2 Far

Friday, March 31, 2006

Well, in keeping with the April Fool's theme, here are some examples of pranks turned bad...
  • The son of the boss came out one morning and said that his mom handed the business over to him.  By noon, two employees had resigned.  Let's just hope they were not two "good employees".
  • The boss told his employees that they had won the lottery as a syndicate.  An employee booked an expensive vacation for herself and her boyfriend...
  • An employee put glue on the rim of the office toilet and the boss sat on it.  Why did it have to be the boss???
  • An employee brought a hamster to the office to see if co-workers would be scared.  Instead, the hamster pooed everywhere.

This last one won the prize:

  • An employee switched the name of a co-worker's girlfriend and "other friend" on his cell phone.  That co-worker addressed his girlfriend as if she was his mistress (like "you got the wrong name", etc.)...

Here are the top 10 pranks according to the survey:

  • Wall-paper a co-worker's whole cubicle with pictures.
  • Hide inside the refrigerator and scare anybody opening it.
  • Copy one's behind and put the stack of paper back in the paper bin.
  • Turn the clock one hour back.
  • Pretend office is closed when boss is out.
  • Place fake rubber chocolate in the break room.

Well, isn't that imaginative?

Practical Joke by a 15-Year Old Boy

Tuesday, March 14, 2006

A Google fan tried to play a joke on his friends by submitting a fake press release claiming that he was Google's youngest employee at 15 years old.

"(I-Newswire) - 15 year old student, Tom Vendetta has been hired by search engine giant Google Inc. The student will receive a lowered salary, which will be placed into a bank account for future education, said Google CEO Larry Page. When asked what role Vendetta will play at the Tech Giant's offices, Page said he wouldnt have a role at the Main Offices. Instead he would work from his home in the New Jersey suburbs. Vendetta will be incharge of working with recent security flaw's in Google's beta e-mail service, "Gmail". Google said they first found out about him when they discovered the student's blog, at
http://tomvendetta.be. The media giant said they looked forward to working with Vendetta's expertise in JavaScript and AJAX."

After issuing the press release, the boy found out that his joke had become an international tech story. Google was even displaying a reference to his press release in its Google News section.

"(Stepforth.com) The prank has made Vandetta temporarily famous. His Gmail account received almost 400 emails in the first few hours. Vandetta has since had to open new Gmail and MySpace accounts. His parents are changing their phone number and he is working to re-establish a workable online identity. On the brighter side, he has received a few emails from Google employees assuring him he has not dashed his dreams of one day working for Google, as he thought he might have."
