| You are looking for work in this tough market and it is difficult. You are shy and timid. Could this be affecting your search? Yes, it certainly could.
It a tight job market, and with the abundance of lay offs – the person you are interviewing with is probably over stressed and overworked. They are trying to quickly determine if you are the right person for the job. It may be harder for you to establish your qualifications and move into round two with shy answers. Beware, without preparation, you could be unemployed longer than you’d like to be.
Preparation could help you overcome the lack of ability for your qualifications and experience to stand out in the interview. It is twice as hard for you to openly review your experience and qualifications as it is for an extroverted, outgoing man or woman. You can counteract this weakness with preparation.
Write out a sample introduction. Write out answers to the most commonly asked interview questions. Practice them over and over again. Prepare answers for your position objective, your strengths, your weaknesses, why you’d like this particular position, and what you feel the obstacles for this position may be. Pretend you are an actor and practice saying your answers with confidence in front of a mirror. Attempt to say them in a non shy way with energy and conviction.
This practice will help you to overcome some of your shyness when you are in the interview. Don’t concentrate on the four hours you spent preparing. If you get the position, it will all be well worth it. If you don’t get the position, then I’m confident that each practice session and interview will put you closer and closer to success. Keep trying. Perseverance will pay off.
