Networking your Way Into a Job
Bethany Williams
There are positions available at companies, but as you know, it is much harder to get in the door. With limited budgets, companies are hiring referrals from their employees. By hiring a contact of someone in the company, they feel that they are taking less of a risk. They can’t afford to be wrong in this market. Money in organizations’ budgets is tight. Salaried jobs are few and far between and they need each of them to provide a return on their investment. There is no room for error.

Networking is a key tool, not only to finding a job, but to become knowledgeable about key openings in your chosen field. If you do not network, you may be making it harder than it needs to be.

Pick three people in your industry that you’ve met and respect and commit to contacting them at least 4 times this year. The most result will come when you start to think of ways that you can add value to their lives. Networking is truly finding someone in your field that you have something in common with. Find someone you like. Sometimes we create a one sided view of networking in our minds — how can they help me? True value relationships come from caring for the other person. It involves both giving and taking.

Your goal is to develop a few trusted relationships with people in your field. Your goal is to minimize shotgun networking and aim your sights on deeper more meaningful contacts. It is in these valuable contacts that you will find help and ideas about future jobs and positions.
