This cover letter example is that of a new graduate in social sciences applying for a position in a correctional facility. It stands out by the fact that the applicant expresses her interest in the position and elaborates on it in a way that sounds genuine. She then concludes by joining two reference letters from a placement clinical manager and an external supervisor.

Anita Wood
Clinical Manager
Stepneyville Community Prison
5 Colgate Street
Murchison, NZ, 0988

Dear Ms. Wood,

I wish to apply for the position of “Part-time Addictions Counselor”, as advertised in Prison Careers on November 6, 2014.

I am just about to graduate with a Bachelor of Social Services degree from Murchison Polytechnic, and am seeking a graduate counseling position in the Orkney region. I am interested in this position particularly as during my studies the Addictions paper was the one I enjoyed the most. I have also been fascinated with therapeutic communities for quite some time, and would enjoy the opportunity to work inside this challenging yet rewarding environment.

I have many skills that I believe make me an excellent candidate. For example, I possess strong mediation, negotiation, and problem-solving skills. I am also extremely motivated and resilient and have an ability to connect and form rapport with people from all socioeconomic, racial, religious, and cultural backgrounds. I am committed to upholding the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in my work through engaging clients in a collaborative partnership of active participation and upholding appropriate codes of ethics in order to protect their safety.

Thank you for the opportunity to apply for this position. To help you in your decision-making process I have attached letters from my placement clinical manager and external supervisor.

Yours sincerely,

Anna Smith
