The cover letter example below is that of a new graduate in mechanical engineering. The applicant started the cover letter by stating that he would be graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the California Polytechnic State University in June 2006. Despite his lack of work experience, he was able to shine through by drawing attention to his overall knowledge of "leading edge" engineering principles, tools and practices, with emphasis on designing, building and testing of mechanical systems. In that regard, he stated his proficiency with the use of various automated solutions, including current releases of AutoCAD and SolidWorks. In areas where knowledge and technology is evolving at a fast pace, this can actually be a strength if you are a new graduate. In the fourth paragraph, the applicant discussed school projects in which he was the sole or lead designer. Additionally, he mentioned that he was a responsible leader in a family owned business, although he did not specify his role (maybe this is clarified in his resume). The applicant then addressed some of his soft skills and concluded the cover letter by reiterating his interest in landing a position as a mechanical engineer with the employer.
