These days around 11 percent of resumes include links to social media. If yours isn't one of them, it's time to make a few changes. Why bother? Because the more information you can show your potential employers, the more likely they will be to offer you a position.

What to Include

Your social networking links should be at the top of your resume. If you haven't already, create a LinkedIn profile. This is a great site for professional networking and many employers use it. You can even post your resume and professional details right on the site. Also include links to your Facebook and Twitter accounts, but be sure that there is nothing posted on them that you wouldn't want your prospective employer to see.

Optimize Your Profiles

Boost your online profiles with keywords. Many employers use Google and automatic tracking systems to find suitable candidates. Add keywords and industry jargon to your resume and your profiles so that you will be easily spotted. Stay Up to Date

Make sure that all your information is current. The best way to stay on top of things is to keep a list of all your social media accounts so that you can change them as needed. If you have several, you can handle them all at once with an aggregator such as Hootsuite. These free applications offer a user-friendly interface that allows you to make changes to all your social networks at once.

Brand Yourself

Don't just copy and paste from your resume to your social network profile. Instead, develop an online brand. Keep your profile brief and to the point. Include a list of your skills and add a professional headshot. You can make your profile stand out even more by creating a personal or professional logo to display as your Facebook cover photo and Twitter background. Maintain consistency between your profiles so that employers will see that you have a solid brand.

Get Endorsed

One of the main benefits of having social media profiles, particularly LinkedIn, is that you can post endorsements. Strong recommendations can push you to the top percentile of professionals in your specific field. If you don't have any yet, request endorsements from people you have worked with before so that employers can see the areas in which you really stand out.

Keep Networking

Let other people in your social networks know that you are in the job market. You may be surprised how many people pass on a helpful contact. Link up with groups related to your profession. Often companies have online discussions where you can chat about openings and exchange employment tips. Keep abreast of tweets and Facebook posts from companies and individuals you would like to work with so you can learn more about them.
